AUSTIN (KXAN) — As temperatures reach new lows and snow and ice pile up on the streets, the homeless camps that are usually bustling look abandoned.  The relocation of many of Austin’s homeless population is partially thanks to citizen volunteer groups, such as Austin Mutual Aid and Austin Community Advancement Brigade. Starting on Saturday, these fully volunteer-run groups have put as many people as possible in hotel rooms.

Last summer, in the middle of the pandemic, Amanda and many of her neighbors received letters from Sierra Vista saying that they had 30 days to remove their trailers from the lots. The city insists that the homes must be moved because these lots are not zoned for “recreational vehicles.” The city doesn’t maintain that Amanda’s home or any of the other homes are unsafe. In fact, it is completely legal to live in an RV in some parts of Cloud 9, just not the part Amanda lives in.
