I recently had a problem with my vpn that I thought I might share with folks. It took me a lot of time to figure it out. But if you find this maybe it will help save you some time.
I have a vpn set up between my office and my home network. My vpn was connecting and I was able to ping ip addresses from home to my network at the office.
However, none of my shares were working. While I couldn’t access folders on the network I knew I was connected because I could ping all the machines at the office.
Well, it was a very simple NetBios broadcast configuration on the router.
Somehow, NetBIOS Broadcast got unenabled in the vpn section of the router. You can see that here:
It is in Policy Setup – Options
I had double checked NetBIOS on all the computers and that was fine. But I hadn’t been in the options section of the router for a very long time so I just never thought to look there.
Once I found the problem the fix couldn’t have been easier.
Phrases I searched for included:
vpn connected but no shares
vpn connection ok but can’t share
can’t access shares through vpn
cannot access shared folders on vpn

I thought this might be just what you needed.
I thought, “My mother’s xincom dual wan router probably is having NetBIOS broadcasting difficulties across her vpn. I better let her know how to diagnose and fix that.”
And sure enough I was right.
I’m happy to help ๐
