The sentiment of this sign keeps me marching forward. “I just want to live.”
For me, it’s not about the food or the tents or any of that. For me, it’s about acceptance. Homeless people are going through a dark part of their journey. And the LAST thing they need is us telling them they are living wrong. We shun them like they are rats. When really they are in the midst of brutal suffering and struggle.
I will always maintain that it is US that is the villain in the story of homelessness. We are Darth Vader. We are Satan. We are the embodiment of hate and cruelty heaped on a weak and beaten person.
So I march forward.
