I read this article: Akron, Ohio, police condemn councilwoman's comment on Jayland Walker and my first thought was: "Why am I doing this to myself?"
I could sell a couple assets and retire. I'm 51 years old and I could just move to an island or California or someplace where there is less racism and hatred for people that don't look like me.
Akron City Councilwoman At-Large Linda Omobien stated at a recent council meeting that “Jayland Walker was murdered by police.”
“Our members are furious and very upset by these comments,” said FOP President Clay Cozart. “We had close to 100 members here Wednesday and the no-confidence vote was unanimous. We condemn her comment.”
Linda Omobien looks like this:
Clay Cozart looks like this:
Now don't get me wrong. If I become Ward 8 City Council leader they will gladly come after me even though I look more like Clay than I do Linda. It will be easier for them because I'm white and they will say it has nothing to do with racism. But it most certainly will.
That's because I'm a "race traitor". I've been called that on Facebook and in person.
I had a older Black homeless man ask me point blank: "Aren't you afraid for you and your businesses because you are a nigger lover?"
It's going to be bad for me. I am not under any delusions that they aren't going to do everything in their power to destroy me any way they can.
I am already facing fines and jail time if I put one more tent on my land. They'll just keep turning that vice on me.
Akron has a new menacing law where you get an automatic 3 days in jail if a politician believes they are being menaced. I fully expect to be charged of that at some point (even though I have said time and time again that my strategy is completely non-violent.)
The Ohio Revised Code's definition for the crime of menacing states, “No person shall knowingly cause another to believe that the offender will cause physical harm to the person or property of the other person, the other person's unborn, or a member of the other person's immediate family.
At the same time I was fantasizing about my early retirement I saw this article: Nobel Peace Prize winner sentenced to 10 years in prison by Belarusian court | The Hill
The official Twitter account for the Nobel Prize posted after the sentencing that Bialiatski has advocated for fundamental human rights, democracy and freeing political prisoners from Belarusian jails for many years. It quoted him as saying last year that, “It just so happens that people who value freedom the most are often deprived of it.”
And that was it. That's all I needed.
I would rather be in prison because I stood up for basic human rights of the most oppressed, hated and forgotten citizens of Akron than sitting on a beach somewhere with not a care in the world. The beach would be much more of a prison for me. I would be tortured by shame and guilt for not standing up against evil in the name of all those who are dying on the cement with the knee of the powerful white man on their neck.
I cannot promise you that I will be able to move the racists on city council one lick.
But incremental moves are nothing compared the the tectonic shifts that hope and love and righteousness can do to the world. Everything I do is done for the mind-blowingly good and kind and generous people I see every single day here in Akron. The goodness of Akron is breathtaking. I fight for you. I fight because it's the very least I can do given all that you do.
We are treating Black people, addicted people and poor white people like animals. They are less than human in the eyes of the powerful white elites of Akron Ohio. They believe that their racism and elitism is just what the future of Akron needs.
ALL COMMON SENSE AKRONITES know that's the past. The future is a place where we respect our land, our nature, our water, our people regardless of race or income.
The future is a place of love and respect. The past is a place of hate and prejudice.
There are many things you can say about me. But no one and I mean NO ONE can say I won't fight with everything I have for the those that are being sidelined in Akron.
PLEASE vote for me for Ward 8 Akron City Council on May 2, 2023.
Together, we can fix the problems of our country. Divided, the powerful win. Please add your email to my list of supporters.
