Of all the people we as a society find totally acceptable to be homeless (veterans, seniors, pregnant women) HOMELESS KIDS are the group that confounds me the most. I mean don’t we love kids in America? On second thought, we continually allow schools to get shot up and we do NOTHING about that either. Never mind, America doesn’t care about anyone. My bad.

These situations take mental and physical tolls on students and make learning difficult. Emde recalled a metaphor taught in her training where two students are walking to school and one is having to carry so much extra baggage he can barely walk.  Not only do these children come to school without a good meal, clean clothes or a shower, but they have often gone many sleepless nights worrying about whether their family will have heat when it gets cold or if they’re going to be able to keep their house.
